Chris Brown's Party Tour Stops in Minneapolis at the Xcel Energy Center
Chris Brown brought "The Party Tour" to Minneapolis on Sunday, April 9th, 2017. As much as I thought this show would be a big one, it really wasn't all that busy when I arrived at Xcel Energy Center to photograph the show for 99.1 KEEZ, (Z99). After checking in and getting escorted into the venue, I could see there wasn't very many people inside either. I'm sure everyone knows about Chris Brown's story, so there's no need to go into that here, but I couldn't help but wonder what attendance would have been if 50 Cent had remained on the lineup, (50 Cent was on the original announcement).
This show ended up being a soundboard shoot after a few emails back and forth the day of the show. It wasn't too big of a deal since the stage was in the center of the venue and was quite large. It was at least 8 foot tall, so photos would have been near impossible to get if we were in the pit. It really was an impressive setup and I can't imagine how long it must have taken to set it all up. The stage itself lit up and appeared to be a large video screen, but I couldn't really see what it was displaying since I was at floor level.
The show started an hour after it was originally scheduled and I could tell by looking around that people were starting to wonder what was going on. I assume the hope was to fill the seats more before starting. Once the show did start, there was a pretty decent amount of people there. Since the opening acts went by quickly and there wasn't much time in between them, the photographers were able to stay through all of them. Casanove 2X, Kap G, O.T. Genasis, and Fabolous all took turn getting the crowd worked up. Everyone sang along and had a great time during all of their performances. Each of the opening acts walked to all of the 4 sides of the stage and made sure to keep moving throughout the entire set. Fabolous even made use of a platform and rose up on the center of the stage when he started and then went back down when he was done!
By the time the opening acts were done, the crowd was more than ready for Chris Brown, and they didn't have to wait long. Shortly after Fabolous left the stage, the large screen box that was above center stage lowered and started a 60 second countdown. It raised back up and Chris Brown came down from the center hanging from a harness that allowed him to spin and flip while singing. There were also people on each corner with the same aerial setup that would float up from time to time. Add in all the dancers on the stage and there was a lot to observe! After the first song, Chris Brown took the harness off and kept his feet on the stage. The photographers were allowed 2 songs for his performance and they were over quick! However, I'm sure the crowd got quite the show judging from the first two songs!
Even with the extra wait at this show, I could tell the crowd felt it was worth it. It was certainly a show that everyone at the Xcel Energy Center enjoyed!
As always, get out and support live music and I'll see you out there!
